Inter Milan's Serie A Title Hopes Dented by Napoli Draw
Reigning Champions Hold Nerazzurri to 0-0 Stalemate
Milan, Italy - April 10, 2023
Inter Milan's pursuit of a record-extending 20th Serie A title suffered a setback on Sunday as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by reigning champions Napoli at the San Siro.
The Nerazzurri, who had won their last five league games, were unable to break down a resilient Napoli defense, which was marshaled by star center back Kalidou Koulibaly. Inter had a handful of chances, with Lautaro MartÃnez and Nicolo Barella both hitting the woodwork, but ultimately could not find the decisive goal.
The result leaves Inter second in the table, three points behind Napoli with seven games remaining. Despite the setback, Inter's title hopes remain alive, as they have a game in hand over their rivals.
Napoli, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 11 matches. The reigning champions have now won seven consecutive Serie A games and are in a strong position to retain their title.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi was frustrated with his team's performance after the match.
"We didn't play well enough today," Inzaghi said. "We had enough chances to win the game, but we were not clinical enough in front of goal. We need to improve our finishing if we want to win the title."
Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti was delighted with his team's performance.
"I'm very happy with the result," Spalletti said. "We played a very good game against a strong Inter team. We defended well and created some good chances of our own. We are still in a strong position to win the title, and this result gives us a lot of confidence."
