Borussia Dortmund legend Alfred 'Aki' Schmidt dies at 81
The former Germany international made 25 appearances for his country and was a key member of the Borussia Dortmund team that won the Bundesliga title in 1963.
Schmidt died on Friday after a short illness. He was 81.
Borussia Dortmund are mourning the passing of club legend Alfred 'Aki' Schmidt, who has died at the age of 81 following illness.
Schmidt was a key member of the Borussia Dortmund team that won the Bundesliga title in 1963. He also made 25 appearances for Germany, scoring four goals.
After retiring from playing, Schmidt went on to manage Borussia Dortmund, Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen.
Borussia Dortmund chairman Reinhard Rauball said: "Aki Schmidt was a great player and a great person. He will be sadly missed by everyone at the club."
Schmidt's funeral will take place on Thursday at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.
